Rachael Handley, MSc, BSc

Sports Nutritionist, Lifestyle Advisor and Sports Massage Practitioner

​Rachael began her involvement in sport as a swimmer, becoming a national medallist in the 50m Breaststroke, before going on to become an international Pentathlete representing GB in a World Cup event in 2009. Since retiring from competitive sport, Rachael has competed in triathlons and completed the Ironman UK in 2013. All of this has been achieved alongside full time education or employment, giving her first-hand knowledge of the importance of efficient time management and organisation. 

Rachael graduated with a MSc in Sports Nutrition from Loughborough University. Her dissertation, focusing on the effects of dehydration and swimming, was published in the International Journal of Sports Nutrition & Exercise Metabolism (‘Water and Salt Balance of well-trained swimmers in training’). She also holds the 1st4Sport Level 3 Certificate in Talented Athlete Lifestyle Support, Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage and is a Level 2 Swimming Coach.

Main areas of support

Sports Nutrition Consultations

Rachael delivers one-to-once sessions for individuals looking to get the most out of their training. Support helps ensure that nutrition practices are are optimal for supporting training needs. Rachael has delivered these consultations for a number of sports. The initial meeting and follow up normally costs £40, with a charge of £25 for subsequent meetings and consultations. 

Sports Nutrition Workshops​

As well as Individual consultations, Rachael delivers Nutrition, Recovery and Lifestyle Workshops which can be tailored to meet the group’s needs of any sporting group. Topics covered include training and competition nutrition, time management and goal setting. A 90min workshop would typically cost £150- £200, depending on the location and the resources provided. Discounts are offered for multiple sessions.

Experience

Rachael has more than 10 years’ experience delivering nutrition, personal development, welfare and lifestyle support to high performance athletes. She has supported athletes from a range of sports and a range of abilities, from those looking to compete on the international stage to those looking to complete their first triathlon. 

She has delivered the following support to athletes and coaches:
  • Nutrition for training and competition support to the Shropshire Swimming Programme
  • Nutrition workshop for marathon training and competition 
  • Nutrition for Swimming for the ASA Beacon Programme
  • Nutritional support for first time triathletes, Ironman participants and elite swimmers.
  • Individual lifestyle support to elite student-athletes in her capacity as Athlete Support Officer at the University of Bath (2012 - 2013). 
  • Mentoring to high performance student-athletes at the University of Birmingham as part of her role as Club Development Manager (2007-2010).
